AGO Report Shows Economic, Recreational Benefits of Conservation

Thursday, October 13, 2011

Thousands of jobs and billions of dollars in economic activity can be attributed to America’s great outdoors, says a new report by the America’s Great Outdoors (AGO) Initiative.

The report, resulting from 15 federal agencies outlining and combining their conservation and recreation successes, includes gains in youth employment, new trail destinations, the creation of urban campgrounds, and historic investments in large landscapes.

Efforts by agencies to work with the private sector as well as nonprofit and community partners are also highlighted in the report. Examples of the collaborative efforts can be seen here.

Launched by the Obama Administration, the AGO is a non-partisan conservation initiative that seeks to bring all parties to the table to develop a 21st century conservation and recreation agenda.

“The quality and accessibility of our outdoor spaces have a significant impact on the economic and physical health of American communities,” said Nancy Sutley, Chair of the Council on Environmental Quality. “Actions under the America’s Great Outdoors Initiative are reinvigorating a national discussion about the value of conservation, resulting in smart innovative strategies and investments that respond to the priorities of American Communities.”
