Fern Studios
Launched in 2009, Fern Studios, LLC crafts stunning heirloom-quality tables, lamps and other furniture from sustainably sourced American hardwoods. Fern allows owner and masterful woodworker Jason Roskey to pursue his longtime interest in fine furniture making and visual arts.
Jason began Fern with borrowed woodworking equipment in a rented workshop in the Gowanus section of Brooklyn. In October 2011, he and his talented partner Maggie Goudsmit, who helps with the media side of the business, and their daughter relocated to Germantown, New York to set up a permanent workshop with easier access to locally sourced wood.
Roskey uses Eastern hardwoods (including black walnut and Ambrosia beetle-damaged soft maple) and Claro Walnut (from walnut orchards in California) for his pieces. He sources his wood from small Programme for Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC )–certified sawmills in New Jersey and Ohio and urban arborists in upstate New York, Pennsylvania, Idaho, Oregon, and Northern California.
Fern received a ShadeFund loan of $7,500 to purchase new woodworking equipment.

Natural resources need economic value to sustain and further the goals of conservation. ShadeFund is promoting that economic value and making triple bottom line results a reality.
